Candy Store

Cocktail? Get out your Rings!

I once arrived in Cannes for the Film Festival and my friend Claudia, seeing my collection of cocktail rings, exclaimed: “Wow, it’s like a candy store!”

Rings2Part of my own collection of cocktail rings

I started collecting vintage cocktail rings many years ago, mainly in the early years of Ebay. Cocktail rings were NOT in fashion at the time, but I have always loved the power of the “statement” ring. These rings are definitely “more is more” and often a subject for conversation! Now they are coming abck in fashion in a big way. Look below for “Create the Look”.

“Fabuloso” Fortuny

A Pleated Silk Gown & the Making of the Modern Women

Delphos dress, Mariano Fortuny, 1909. Purple silk satin.Detail of a Fortuny “Delphos” Gown, probably around 1920

At the beginning of the 20th century, when most women’s fashion was still dictated by the corset, Mariano Fortuny created the “Delphos” gown – described by Marcel Proust as “faithfully antique and markedly original.”  Inspired by, and named after, a classical Greek statue, the Charioteer of Delphi,  the unstructured dress clung sensuously to the body, daringly revealing the wearer’s shape…These dresses became all the rage! Below on this post you will find “create the look for less”.

Black & White : The Glamour of Zebra Print

My mother had a “fundi” (handy fellow) in Narobi who would make handbags to her own design, in leather and exotic hides, not PC, I know, but those were the days. She designed two “groovy” mini bags in zebra hide with long straps for my sister and I. We wore them “to death”; they had literally shed all their hairs…In fashion, coats seem somehow the best option for zebra print. Below this post some zebra accessories in “create the look for less”.

Tulip Mania

Economic speculation, the birth of futures & options contracts and a market crash in Holland’s Golden Age

There is something so deliciously mad about the phenomenon of Tulip Mania in 17th century Holland where “protestant restraint” was “de rigeur”. This was the “Golden Age” of the Netherlands, when sophisticated modern economic systems were invented: the first-ever multinational corporation (the Dutch East India Company founded in 1602), financed by shares that established the first modern stock exchange and the Bank of Amsterdam (established in 1609), the precursor to, if not the first true central bank.

Tulip Anonymous 17th-century watercolor of the Semper Augustus, famous for being the most expensive tulip sold during tulip mania.

Jungle Love

The Lasting Power (and Danger) of Leopard Print

Leopard print is a dangerous thing, there is a thin line between fabulous and vulgar…My glamorous New York friend Marilyn always says: “the real test of love is when your man accepts some leopard in his life…”

Leopard is a great pattern both for interior design (see “Create the look for Less” below) or fashion.
