The Colors of the Rainbow

The daring combination of Orange, Pink & Red

I used to be a strictly black and white girl, both in dress and décor, but over the years color has crept into my life, and I now embrace every color of the rainbow. The master of the exiting pink & orange color combination was Yves Saint Laurent, just look how that works in this beautiful YSL Rive Gauche creation from 1984 (see “create the look for less” below):

Basket Case…

I am proud to be called a “Basket Case”

My passion for baskets is all shapes and forms from all over the world must be rooted in my African childhood. Growing up in Kenya, baskets were a feature in all aspects of life. “Oh no! Not another basket!” is a recurring exclamation from the man in my life…

There is something sexy and innocent about a girl nonchalantly swinging a basket as a tote bag…I once read the lovely Jane Birkin also has the basket bug…

I see things, wonderful things…

On 26 November 1922, Howard Carter peeked into Tutankhamun’s Tomb and glimpsed the pharoah’s treasure by candlelight. ‘Can you see anything?’ asked Lord Caernavon, ‘Yes, wonderful things’ Howard Carter famously replied…

This is exactly how I feel when entering René and Barbara Stoeltie’s elegant Gemini Art Gallery, just off the famous Place des Sablons, in Brussels. With an uncanny eye and faultless taste, René and Barbara offer something for every budget.

A New Perspective…

As we were already on the subject of Florence yesterday, I can not resist talking more about the Renaissance and amongst other things, the discovery of the use of perfect perspective in art.

The painter Masaccio (1401 – 1428),  was one of the great Italian painters of the Quattrocento period. As Donatello and Brunelleschi were the first to incorporate linear perspective into their sculptures and architecture, Masaccio was the first in painting.

Grey Matters…

The Power of Grey and White…

When I first entered the Pazzi Chapel at the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence as a History of Art student, I was mesmerized by the power of grey and white, with as an only touch of color the terra cotta “rondi” in white and blue glaze…It felt serene, more about that below…
